What Shopify Sidekick can't do (and what to use instead)

TL;DR: Sidekick is excellent at answering questions and doing tasks while you are in the Shopify admin. It doesn’t work your store when you’re away, doesn’t touch anything outside Shopify, doesn’t remember your business over time, and doesn’t serve agencies running many stores. Those four gaps define what an operations agent platform is for.

Credit where due: what Sidekick does well

Shopify’s Sidekick has become genuinely capable. As of the Winter ‘26 release it works on every screen of the admin (typing or voice), executes multi-step tasks with store-wide context, drafts campaigns and discount codes, analyzes sales data, builds simple Flow automations, and proactively surfaces recommendations through Sidekick Pulse. It’s included free with every Shopify plan.

If your question is “how do I do X in Shopify” or “write a description for this product,” Sidekick is the right tool and you should use it.

The four structural gaps

1. It only works when you’re working

Sidekick is an assistant in the admin — it responds when you’re there. It doesn’t watch your orders overnight, notice a fulfillment stuck at your 3PL for 52 hours, or chase a carrier while you’re at dinner. Store operations are a 24/7 job; an assistant with your working hours covers a third of it.

2. It stops at Shopify’s walls

Sidekick can’t act on your Klaviyo flows, your Gorgias tickets, your 3PL’s portal, your supplier’s spreadsheet, or your Google Sheet of purchase orders. Real operations run across a stack — order data in Shopify, tracking with the carrier, inventory at the 3PL, conversations in the helpdesk. (Sidekick app extensions are starting to bring third-party data in, but always inside Shopify’s admin, on Shopify’s terms.)

3. It doesn’t accumulate your business

Ask Sidekick something today and again next month — it’s the same assistant, not a colleague who remembers that you always ship EU orders DDP, that supplier X pads lead times by a week, or that the last time you discounted SKU BLK-M it cannibalized the bundle. Operations knowledge compounds; an assistant without durable memory starts from zero every session.

4. It has no answer for agencies

An agency running 30 client stores across Shopify, WooCommerce, and BigCommerce cannot manage them with a per-store admin assistant. There’s no cross-account console, no white-labeling, no per-client approval policies, no unified audit trail. Shopify’s tenancy model ends at the store; agency operations begin above it.

The honest decision guide

Use Sidekick when: you’re in the admin and need answers, content, analysis, or a quick task done. It’s free and good.

Use platform automations (Flow) when: the task is a simple, stable if-this-then-that inside Shopify.

Use an operations agent platform when: the work is ongoing rather than on-demand — exception handling, inventory replenishment, support triage, catalog hygiene; when it spans systems beyond Shopify; when you need approval gates and audit trails because actions touch money and customers; or when you’re an agency operating a portfolio of stores.

Assists vs. operates

The distinction that matters isn’t AI quality — it’s the job description. Sidekick assists: it makes you faster at work you’re present for. An operations agent operates: it owns a lane of repetitive work end to end, reports to you in Slack or WhatsApp, asks permission before doing anything irreversible, and gets better at your specific store every week.

Most serious merchants will end up using both. The mistake is expecting either one to do the other’s job.

Storeworkers builds operating agents — Order-Ops, Inventory, Catalog, and Support — that work under your approval rules, across platforms, around the clock. From $199/month.
